There is a famous and possibly apocryphal story about the way artist Salvador Dali would pay restaurant bills. After taking a large group of friends out to dinner and luxuriating in an evening of food and drink Dali would ask for the bill. He would draft a personal cheque to pay the balance and then, as the waiter watched, he would quickly make a sketch on the back of the cheque and sign it. Knowing that the restaurant owner would never be so vulgar as to give up a Dali original to the bank but would rather frame it and hang it in the restaurant, Dali and his friends got to walk away from a huge feast without paying a penny.
What’s this got to do with graphic design prices you ask? Well, the point of the tale is that only an artist as well known as Dali would’ve got away with this trick at this particular time. Creatives set their own price in the market, determined by how in-demand their work is. As a consequence there is no set list of prices for graphic design work – better, more accomplished or in-fashion designers will charge more for their work than lesser or less trendy ones.
But the title of this article would be highly misleading if we didn’t at least attempt to draw up some kind of guide, however rough, to graphic design prices. So, here goes:
A Rough Guide to Graphic Design Prices
There are a number of services available from professional graphic designers which we’ll look at separately.
Logo Design and Branding
Prices for simple logo design start from a couple of hundred pounds. Full company branding will cost at least £1,000 but expect to pay well over ten times this for designers who work with corporates.
Stationery
Again, simple designs for small company letterheads, business cards and compliment slips will cost around £300 with costs rising rapidly as we move up the scale. Remember to figure printing costs into the prices for stationery. Some printers offer packages which start at around £150.
Website Design
This is another sliding scale – one which starts at around £250 for a professional quality, albeit generic, design. For something that really stands out from the crowd you’re looking at around £1,000 for a simple brochure style website.
Packaging Design
The price for packaging design depends on what the product is and how you’re packaging it i.e. whether you need labels for jars, box design etc. Packages start at around £1,000 to £2,000.
Posters or Adverts
Prices start at around £500 - £1,000 for a single image.
Brochure/Magazine Design
The cost of brochure design starts at around £1,000. Magazines will cost more depending on the number of unique pages that need designing. Again, remember to factor in the cost of printing.
E-mail Campaigns
Prices start around £500 for a single email design. The cost of acquiring an e-mail list and sending the e-mail campaign will be extra on top of the design cost.
Hint: Remember to ask your graphic designers whether they’ll provide any stock photographic images required for your designs or whether you’ll have to buy them separately.
