Benefits of Effective Management Training

It is taken for granted that to be a doctor one must have had some formal medical training, to be a pilot, you need a licence and they won’t even let you flip burgers at your local McDonald’s without a comprehensive course. In the case of business managers however, generally no formal management training is required whatsoever, which does seem a little ironic, especially as they usually command the highest salaries and have the most responsibility.

In the face of this apparent irony (that the highest paid may well have the least training) one can, of course, point to the MBA. Indeed, MBA’s are notoriously difficult and are very highly regarded qualifications but they are essentially concerned with law and accounting, rather than the basic “people management” skills that you need to be a successful manager. The ability to be liked and to motivate a work-force, many would argue, is just as important as raw commercial knowledge. It is assumed that though, that managers will gain enough training in management through their employment experience and perhaps, to an extent, they do. But it is certainly also true, that the extent to which people pick-up those skills varies.

Most of us will have experienced bad management and it is always self-evident when you do. Due to the nature of employment hierarchy though, people seldom, if ever, are willing to pull their manager aside and tell them they’re approaching things in the wrong way; most would consider that professional suicide. Seen from a managers’ perspective, discussing further leadership and management training is likely to be just as unappealing. Whether this is because of arrogance along the lines of “I’m number one, so why try harder?” or from the fear that suggesting your team could benefit from management training is a tacit admission of incompetence, is neither here nor there. The fact remains that all businesses could benefit from effective management training, after all your managers are likely to be your most important and expensive asset, so why on earth wouldn’t you ensure you get the most out of them?

Where can management training help?

Productivity

Whatever business you happen to be in, you need to get the job done and you need to do it as efficiently as possible; that’s your bottom line. To ensure that productivity is maintained, most companies rely on their managers to arrange and supervise workloads and to motivate the staff they are responsible for. Although we all hope to employ people in management positions who are natural leaders and can delegate effectively, the reality is that most people either don’t have management skills in any great quantity to begin with or they fall into bad habits over time. The greatest benefit management training courses can offer then, is the ability to develop company efficiency through increased managerial competence. Learning (or refreshing) simple supervision and leadership techniques, helps individual managers to see and correct the mistakes they are making. By making small corrections through proper training in management, the working atmosphere and the efficiency of an entire company can be vastly improved, which in turn raises the bottom line.

Staff Retention

Unfortunately, many of the staff who choose to leave your company will do so because they don’t like working for you. It’s a simple fact, even if it’s not particularly palatable one. However, it is a problem that training in management skills can address. Of course, there will always be people that don’t fit into your working environment, perhaps because they’re not suited to the nature of the work or never really wanted the job in the first place. However, something as simple as making sure that people feel valued by encouraging a culture of vocal praise or by learning techniques to fairly discipline employees without creating resentment, will help to decrease your staff turn around. Why is that good? Well, frankly, finding and training staff costs a lot of money, which is why management training companies give such an emphasis to staff retention. To highlight how good an investment management training can be, consider how much it costs you to hire and train one member of staff, then compare that sum to the cost of a management training course? If just one or two staff decide to stay on because of improved management technique, your course will have already paid for itself, let alone the other ongoing benefits that management training course will give.

Greater Flow of Knowledge

By improving communication between staff and management, you will help to foster a greater flow of knowledge. This acts in two ways; firstly, having managers that can effectively impart their knowledge and experience to employees improves the overall quality of work being done. To do this though, managers essentially need to also be good teachers. It’s no easy task but learning effective people skills through leadership and management training certainly helps. Secondly, the more strategic and supervisory nature of management roles, necessarily removes each level of management further and further away from the basic fabric of the company work. Good managers therefore, need to also be good listeners; as their main source of information about possible improvements or problems is from bellow, rather than above. By developing an approachable management style and ensuring basic feedback loops in the management structure, you help to ensure that the management is not starved of the very information it needs to work effectively.

Your Competitive Edge

Remaining competitive in a global marketplace is not easy. Changing market conditions, new technologies and new ways of doing business are constantly upsetting the status quo and creating new opportunities for innovative businesses. To stay on top of the competition then, companies need to constantly invest in their workforce, so as to ensure that their managers are equipped to cope with the challenges they will undoubtedly face. Management training therefore, is no longer a luxury, for most it is a necessary and prudent economic decision, taken to safeguard your competitive advantage. Simply put, you may be ahead of your game now but if you don’t continue to invest in your managers, you are unlikely to stay there. Ongoing management training will help to you to stay in front.
