It is often the case that people within an organisation rise to management positions because they’re very good at their jobs and not because they have all the skills and attributes in place that make a person a good manager. In these circumstances a programme of management training can help develop the people, time, resource and technical skills that may not have been necessary in a previous role but which are essential for an effective manager and/or team leader.
Due to the sheer number of options available management training prices vary dramatically and change from year to year as courses come and go. As a consequence there is no set list of prices which can be laid out here. What we can do is look at a selection of different types of management training courses and typical prices for such courses from several providers.
Introductory Management Training
New managers will often lack the practical techniques for leading and motivating a team, not to mention the confidence to implement such techniques. Introductory courses aim to supply the new manager, supervisor or team leader with a clear definition of their role and the ability and assertiveness to manage both the team and individuals within the team effectively.
Examples:
Hemsley Fraser’s ‘People Management Skills for New Supervisors & Team Leaders’ is a two day course which runs in London, Edinburgh and Birmingham and costs £999 +VAT.
Reed Learning run a course called ‘Introduction to Management’ at various locations which is also two days in duration and costs £950 +VAT. They also provide a three day residential course in the Cotswolds for people with some practical management experience called ‘Essentials of Management’ which costs £1,399 +VAT.
Leadership Skills Training
Successful leadership within an organisation is essential to success but how many of your staff in leadership roles have actually taken a course of training aimed at developing the necessary skills? Leadership skills courses help managers develop the communication ability, planning and emotional intelligence they need to inspire and motivate those who follow them.
Examples:
Reed Learning provide the two day ‘Introduction to Supervision and Team Leadership’ for managers with any level of experience. The cost of this course is £899 +VAT.
Phoenix Training and Development’s ‘Inspirational Leadership Course’ on the other hand is targeted at leaders with two years or more experience. The course runs in London and Manchester. Phoenix’s open management training courses cost from £680 +VAT per person.
Employment Law Training
A manager involved in recruiting staff or other aspects of their team members’ employment needs to be acquainted with the legislation in order to ensure compliance. A course of employment law gives managers a good overview of rules and regulations and points up potential pitfalls to help avoid costly tribunals.
Examples:
‘Essential HR for Managers’ is run by Hemsley Fraser in London and guidess line managers through the employment law and HR issues involved in their day to day operations. The course is £999 +VAT.
Reed Learning’s one day course ‘Essentials of Employment Law’ provides a basic grounding for £479 +VAT while their ‘Advanced Employment Law’ builds on this for HR or Personnel Managers and costs £899 +VAT. Both are available in London only.
Conflict Resolution Training
While an essential part of the business environment, conflict can also be harmful to a company. Conflict resolution training helps managers identify the causes of conflict and teaches them to use trust and authority to resolve conflict situations in a positive way.
Examples:
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development run a one day course called ‘Managing Conflict and Difficult Situations’ which costs £510 +VAT.
ProSeminar also run a one day course in London entitled ‘Managing Conflict and Acting Assertively’ which costs £490 +VAT.
Performance Management Training
Knowing how to set meaningful and realisable goals for your team, how to motivate them towards those goals, how to measure success and how to use rewards are all key skills for line managers. A course which teaches performance management techniques endows the candidate with practical techniques and advice for getting the best from their team.
Examples:
Phoenix Training and Development deliver Performance Management Training on a one-to-one basis for which they charge £1,400 +VAT per day or to a group of managers for £1,950 +VAT per day.
Hemsley Fraser’s ‘Performance Management’ is a two day open course and costs £1,029 +VAT.
Change Management Training
Sometimes change is essential for reducing inefficiency and improving productivity but the implementation of change brings with it a whole host of other problems. A course of change management training provides managers with effective methods for overcoming resistance to change and informing them of best practice.
Examples:
Reed Learning delivers a two day ‘Change Management’ course for £899 +VAT.
Maven Training’s ‘Change Management Foundation’ runs in London and costs £1,095 +VAT. They also run a number of more advanced courses on this subject.
Negotiation Skills Training
Managers don’t just have to concern themselves with developments within their own team but must also represent that team in interactions with external bodies, both within the company and without. Negotiating departmental deadlines and budgets or service agreements with clients requires practical techniques for achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. Along with assertiveness skills these provide the confidence required for successful negotiation.
Examples:
‘Negotiation Skills Workshop for Managers’ is a Hemsley Fraser two day course priced at £999 +VAT.
Activia Training’s ‘Effective Negotiation’ course is a one day course which costs £379 +VAT.
Tailored Training
All the training providers mentioned above offer on-site tailored training courses for group of managers within the same organisation. With tailored courses you can decide with the training company what the course content is and the duration of the course.
As mentioned above, Phoenix Training and Development charge £1,950 +VAT for a full day of tailored training. Most providers will charge a similar rate to the per person per day rate for open courses provided there are four or more candidates which require training. Discounts usually apply for bulk booking, sometimes of up to 25%.
