Public relations practice is the act of a company interacting with the public in a way to improve or preserve its reputation. There are three general areas for public relations practice and those are crisis intervention and management, issues management and goodwill building, and relations with investors and people with a stake in the company.

Public relations gets a reputation for being full of something called spin. Spin is when a company can take something negative and turn it into something positive. Usually it's done in a way in which the public perceives it as deceitful or disingenuous. But an example of spin could be a company's building burning down and the public relations people talking about how it's an opportunity to now build a more environmentally friendly building. So spin isn't always negative or something the public needs to be leery of. It can simply be making the best of a bad situation.

That's what a public relations practice can do for a company during a time of crisis. When there's bad press about the company or something has gone wrong, using public relations to help repair the damage and contain the crisis is one of the best ways for a company to keep its head above water. A variety of examples of this are available in the media almost every day. When a company is accused of being selfish and dishonest with employees, the company will answer those charges but very often soon after introduced some new plan meant to gain back people's goodwill. Recycling programs or charity programs are often used in this way.

A public relations practice can also help when there's not a crisis going on. That can help fortify a company in the case of bad publicity or simply help them generate some good publicity. A company getting involved in programs for underprivileged children, for instance, is one way to generate goodwill. Lowering prices on making their products more affordable is another way. There are many different ways to practice good public relations in good and bad times.

Investors public relations practice

Companies also must maintain good public relations with investors and those who own shares in the company. There are times when this seems at odds with the face the company must put on for the public. Sometimes a company's decision can look negative to the public but be a good one for the company's investors, and vice versa. The public relations staff have to work very hard to try to appear as positive to both the public at large and investors in these situations.

An important aspect of public relations practice is the ability to act fast and decisively when something happens. That goes for good and bad situations. A company would want to act quickly to fight off bad press. But it's just as important for a company to take advantage of good press and any type of positive coverage or attention that comes their way.
