If you think you’re paying too much for your current line rental or call package it might well be worth taking the time to make a proper comparison of business telephone lines deals. There are a lot of options besides BT on the market today and as well as the savings to be made on lines and calls, you can also gain an improvement on customer service or benefit from the efficiency that results from dealing with just one supplier for telephone lines, system and broadband provision.
How Do Business Telephone Line Providers Work?
Business telephone line companies rent lines from the major telecoms companies (Tier 1 carriers) wholesale which enables them to pass the savings on to their customers. By using existing infrastructure they can concentrate on providing customer service – billing, installation, repairs and servicing etc. So in essence it’s a bit like your utility company – they don’t pump the gas or even carry it to your home, they just provide the ancillary customer services.
Many business telephone line providers will also provide broadband services and telephone systems for lease or purchase. Sometimes there will be a better deal on offer if you get a complete solution with all three included. Making a proper comparison of providers will involve taking these factors into consideration – especially if you’re looking to upgrade your hardware or broadband connection anyway.
Business Telephone Line Options
There are three main telephone line options available and which is most suitable will depend on your business and the number of users:
-
POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) Lines: These are analogue lines which allow one call per line. Can be used singly or combined for a multi-line system with a PBX (exchange).
-
ISDN: Digital lines which allow voice and data transmission at the same time. Each ISDN line has two channels. Clarity of calls is often better than with POTS.
-
ISDN30: Each line has 8 channels i.e. 8 lines are available from just one cable. Ideal for larger businesses where each employee has a direct dial number.
All the same features will normally be available as with BT though such things as Call Waiting, Call Minder, 1471 etc will be less important if you’re using a proper business phone system that will manage these for you.
Always check a supplier’s website for testimonials from previous clients to assess their service levels and gather as many quotes as you can for accurate comparison of rates, fees etc. Also check that any required installation can be arranged at a time to suit you.
If you’re looking into broadband provision too, check download and upload speeds and whether service is guaranteed.
