Compare Quotes for Access Platforms
Working at height is as normal to some industries as using a desktop computer is to others. Just like your computer needs to be suitable for the kind of tasks you want it to perform, an access platform needs to be suited to the particular requirements of the job not only to ensure the work gets done properly but also cost effectively and safely.
Many companies offer access platforms for sale and hire with and without operators and/or training – having a clear idea of what you require form a platform is the first step towards choosing the right bit of kit for the job.
Access Platform Types
There are three main types of access platform which are all suited to different types of work environment and task.
-
Vertical Personnel Lifts: These raise a platform for one person by way of a telescopic mast (they are also called mast lifts), usually to a height of 5-10m. Most are small, manoeuvrable, self-propelled electric powered units suitable for use in factories and warehouses where space is limited, though they can also be mounted on vans.
-
Scissor Lifts: These raise a much larger platform and can carry a much larger load than personnel lifts but require more room to manoeuvre. They raise straight up and down only by way of concertinaed rigid supports. They are commonly used when scaffolding would take too much time to erect or is unsuitable for the location. Available in diesel powered and electric versions which makes them suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
-
Boom Lifts (Cherry Pickers): These lifts have an articulated boom which provides horizontal outreach as well as vertical lift. They are commonly mounted on vans and trucks but self-propelled versions are also available. They can raise workers and equipment to a height of up to 18m with an outreach of up to 10m. Outriggers can be supplied to provide extra support and stability for uneven ground or adverse weather conditions.
Hiring an Access Platform
Access platforms are expensive and bulky pieces of equipment so for one-off or infrequent working at height requirements hiring a platform makes a lot of sense. Trained operators can be hired along with the equipment to ensure safe and correct operation, or, if you expect to hire platforms regularly, training courses are available from most suppliers.
We recommend comparing quotes from several suppliers in order to find the right piece of equipment at the right price - it’s also worth remembering that transport costs will be factored in to the rental price so choosing a fairly local supplier is often most cost effective.
