Working at height is necessary on a regular basis in a whole host of industries and on an occasional basis in many, many more. Luckily plenty of specialist equipment is available for purchase or hire which makes working at height a safe and straightforward procedure. Aerial work platforms, scissor lifts and cherry pickers all come in a variety of sizes and types which means that finding the right platform for your needs is simply a matter of choosing the right one.
Aerial Work Platform Types
There are three main varieties of aerial access platform, each of which is suitable for different applications.
Vertical Personnel Lifts are mobile, self-propelled (mostly electric powered) mast lifts which can raise one worker straight up and down. These are handy for indoor environment where space is at a premium and there is little room for manoeuvre. They commonly lift a person to a maximum height of 5-10m.
Scissor Lifts, sometimes also known as flying carpets, also lift straight up and down only but, due to a more robust structure, can do so with more than one person and equipment. They do take up more space but are available in diesel and electric varieties so can be used outdoors on construction sites etc.
Boom lifts, also called cherry pickers, have articulated booms which provide outreach (sometimes up to 10m) as well as height (up to 20m). They come in self-propelled versions and also mounted on vans and trucks. In order to provide greater stability on uneven ground, in adverse weather conditions or to counter the natural play in a vehicle’s suspension, outriggers are often deployed.
Which is the most appropriate platform for your needs will depend on whether you’ll be using the machine indoors or outdoors, how mobile you need the platform to be, whether you need horizontal and vertical reach and how many workers/how much load you need to lift.
Choosing an Aerial Work Platform Supplier
Once you know what kind of platform you require you’re in prime position to compare prices form different suppliers. When purchasing a platform price is obviously the most important consideration. Most suppliers provide new and second hand options.
Hiring also involves other considerations such as minimum hire period (often several days), location (as transporting the equipment to site will incur a charge) and whether a trained operator is required in addition to the equipment.
We recommend comparing quotes from several suppliers in order to gauge the going rates and find the best deal.
