SQL, or Structured Query Language, is a programming language which is used to interrogate and manage data stored in databases. A database with which you can use the SQL language is often referred to as an SQL (or commonly “sequel”) database.
SQL databases are relational databases or, in other words, they store data in tables and store the relationships between different pieces of data in other tables. This allows the data to be organised in a variety of ways without modifying its essential characteristics.
SQL databases are used in a variety of different businesses and organisations. They are often stored on a shared server and accessed by programmes installed on individual users’ desktop PCs or via web based user interfaces.
There are three main ‘brands’ of SQL database:
-
Microsoft SQL Databases
Microsoft SQL Server is a proprietary database server system which runs on Windows networks. Micorsoft claim that SQL Server is the most secure of the major database platforms and offers 99.9999% uptime availability. MS SQL Server is certainly a very robust database solution for commercial applications, the GUI MS Access is familiar to anyone who uses Office programmes and its widespread use ensures compatibility with other software platforms.
-
Oracle Databases
Oracle is the oldest of the currently available database solutions. Another proprietary system, it can run on Windows, Linux or UNIX networks. It allows server ‘clusters’ to create a private cloud which increases speed and reliability – handy for running large scale ecommerce operations with many customers trying to transact at the same time. Various options and add-ons are available for Oracle DBs including a web based GUI (graphical user interface) for data management and manipulation.
-
MySQL Databases
MySQL is an open-source solution for database management. This means that the source code is open for modification and tailoring to a user’s needs. It also means that for non-profit making initiatives MySQL is free – though you will normally need a knowledgeable developer to implement it. For commercial uses, a paid version is also available. There are various ‘front-end’ programmes available for management and manipulation of a MySQL database from third-party developers (e.g. OpenOffice) as well as the official MySQL Workbench which is again available in free open source and more functional ‘Standard’ versions.
