Business Fuel Cards: How it Works
Each of your drivers or vehicles is allocated a credit card style business fuel card. They can use this at participating service stations to pay for fuel which the company is then billed for and has a fixed amount of time in which to pay. Invoices are detailed and VAT approved allowing you to monitor fuel spend and reclaim tax. Anti-fraud measures reduce the chances of theft and skimming.
Most business fuel cards on offer fall into one of two categories: the retail card and the bunker card. Only one of these can offer you lower prices for fuel but at the same time massively restricts the number of service stations you can use.
The Bunker Card – The fuel card provider buys fuel in bulk and stores it at various sites throughout the country (or even in Europe) which means they can offer near wholesale prices to their customers. Bunker cards:
- Have a fixed weekly price
- Usually only offer diesel
- Offer up front or pay-as-you-go payment options
- Can’t usually be used at more than a few hundred locations in the UK – when you can go off-network you’ll pay pump prices and perhaps a surcharge
The Retail Card – Essentially an interest free fuel credit card which can be used on the supplier’s network. Retail cards:
- Can normally be used on a network of thousands of stations depending on the provider
- Offer online management and fleet management reports
- Can earn reward points or be used to pay for road tolls or for other products at service stations
- In some cases offer long interest free periods (up to six weeks) to help with cash-flow
