Public Relations can be defined on a few different levels. Understanding the differences between these definitions is important when choosing a public relations company.
Public relations, at its basic level, is about publicity, press agentry and relating to the public in a positive way. Publicity is concerned with the publicizing and promotion of your company and its overall purpose as well as specific events concerning your company.
Press agentry is a specific arena of media relations concerned with providing information to media outlets such as the press. These include replies to media inquiries and making qualified spokespersons or experts available for comment or interviews.
Public relations is a blend of both of these, but also can include strategic planning, media training and coaching, crisis management, speech writing, arranging and coordinating press appearances or speaking engagements and lobbying. It can also involve creating literature and other collateral material, annual reports, newsletters and bulletins, presentations, contests and promotions and company web presence.
One of the first things your company needs to consider before choosing a public relations company is the direction and focus your company is going to be taking. Define your company's needs. Before your company can communicate to the public, it needs to now what it wants to achieve. The first step is to identify and prioritize your company's goals.
