Society today is characterized by a global economy, and if your business is ever involved in international ventures, it is highly likely that you will require the services of a translation agency. It is courteous and efficient business practice to provide documents to your clients, partners or shareholders (existing or potential) written in their first language.
However, it is also highly likely that you have personally encountered errors in translation (that often make for amusing stories when they are not happening to you). Translation is by no means a simple process, and requires a highly skilled and experienced human being to do the job (as opposed to a computer-generated translation). It is therefore critical that you employ the right agency to do the job, so as to avoid damage to your business image and subsequent loss of business. The following suggestions will assist you in the task of selecting an agency.
Assess your requirements
An initial assessment of your translation needs is helpful in determining the type of agency that will best suit you. Clarify the nature and format of your original document, as well as the desired format of the translated document, the number of different languages into which you will need the document to be translated, the target audience of the document and the amount and frequency of translation jobs that you expect to need in the future.
These primary considerations should establish whether you need an agency at all a freelance translator might be adequate if you require relatively infrequent translations into only one language. However, anything more complicated than this would probably demand the infrastructure and extra services of an agency.
