Trucks cover a multitude of commercial vehicles used for large scale, long distance haulage. Technically they should be referred to as LGVs (Large Goods Vehicles) within the European Union, but the term HGV is still most commonly used in the UK. To qualify as an HGV a commercial vehicle must weigh over 3.5 tonnes, including everything from relatively small box trucks to 18-wheel articulated lorries.
Trucks are generally divided into 3 classes in the UK:
- Class 1 HGVs include tractor-trailer rigs and articulated lorries, carrying loads of up to 60 tonnes. Over 60 tonnes the vehicles are classed differently and must pay extra fees to use the roads.
- Class 2 HGVs are rigid (non-articulated) trucks with a gross weight (vehicle and load) of up to 38 tonnes.
- Class 3 HGVs are usually the common 7.5 tonne trucks including dropside, flatbed and tipper trucks. A 7.5 tonne truck is the largest vehicle that can be operated by a regular driving license holder.
