High quality, well designed voice and data networks can provide a great boost to a company’s efficiency by allowing reliable, secure, fast communications and data handling. An essential part of successfully installing, expanding or upgrading any local network is laying appropriate cabling in a well planned structure to facilitate optimal information flows. A data and voice cabling installation company can plan, install and provide support for a wide variety of different cabling projects.
Voice Cabling Options
Modern networks commonly integrate voice and data in one solution. This is achieved by using cabling which allows for transmission of both voice and data signals simultaneously. Such cabling, often referred to as ‘structured cabling’ connects computers, phones, printers etc to a central exchange or server. This server acts as the interface with the public telecommunications system or internet for making external voice calls.
Types of structured cabling include:
-
Category 5 or Category 5e Cabling: Also known as Cat5 or the newer Cat5e. This is a type of copper wire cabling. Cat5 cables are unshielded which means they can suffer interference from nearby electrical devices, reducing the quality of the signal.
-
Category 6 or Category 6a Cabling: Cat6 cable supercedes Cat5 and has greater noise reduction. While Cat6 cabling isn’t suitable for covering the same kinds of distances as Cat5 or 5e, the improved Cat6a does maintain signal strength over similar distances to the previous standards.
-
Fibre Optic Cabling: Because they transmit information on the form of beams of light, these plastic fibre cables are faster than copper wire cables (which use an electrical current to transmit a signal) and don’t suffer from interference. Fibre optic cables are frequently employed outdoors to connect office networks to local internet exchanges. But dropping costs are making them more popular for connecting devices within offices due to the superior fidelity and speed they offer.
If you’re unsure of which type of cabling you need it’s worth thinking about how long you expect to use the network. While fibre optic cable is the most expensive option it’s also the most future-proof whereas the cheaper Cat5 may not be able to cope with the volumes of data you’ll be transmitting in a few years’ time.
