Plastic extrusions are plastic products of a continuous cross-sectional profile and which are usually used in construction and manufacturing.
Plastic sheeting, tubing, pipes, coated paper, wire and cable coverings, textile fibres and monofilaments are all examples of products created with the plastic extrusion method. Typical materials used in the plastic extrusion process are polyethylene, polypropylene, acetal, acrylic, nylon, polystyrene and polycarbonate.
In the extrusion process, beads of raw plastic are heated to melting point (up to 275°C) and forced at high pressure (up to 5000psi) through an aperture, or ‘die’, to produce a piece of plastic of any desired length and continuous profile. The profile is determined by the shape of the die. The extruded product is then cooled in a water bath or by rollers so that it hardens into a fixed shape.
Plastic extrusions can be rigid or flexible and have countless uses. They are found in a variety of common household and industrial articles such as window and door frames, electrical insulation, adhesive tape, guttering and pipe work. Plastic sheeting can be further shaped through the process of thermoforming or vacuum forming. Extrusion coating is the process whereby a water resistant sheen is added to paper, as in Tetrapak cartons.
Due to the continuous nature of the plastic extrusion process, extruded products can be manufactured to almost unlimited lengths. Colourants and other chemical treatments can be added prior to melting to produce coloured extrusions and ones which, for example, are UV resistant.
