Not keeping up with Health and Safety legislation can sometimes leave you caught short.
When working at a temporary or semi-permanent site without built-in toilet and washroom facilities it is still a legal requirement to provide adequate toilet facilities for your workers.
Luckily there are plenty of companies who can supply, install, maintain and service construction site toilets for almost any size of workforce, doing any kind of job at any location, so you can leave the strain of sorting out toilets to someone else.
Portable Toilet Types
You’re probably already familiar with the standard portable toilet – a moulded plastic cubicle on a heavy duty base. These have built in toilets with large capacity tanks and require no mains connections. What you may not be aware of are the more sophisticated models with extra features.,
Firstly, HSE regulations also require that you provide adequate washing facilities, which at the least means a wash basin which you can get your hand and forearm into. So the first upgrade from the basic loo has just such a sink with running water either from the mains or a refillable tank.
Toilets need to be well lit, so if you’re running a 24 hour operation you’ll need a unit with lights. These run off a 240V supply and can also provide hot water.
For particularly dirty sites or ones which expose workers to potentially hazardous materials you may also need to provide shower units. These are roughly the same size as the standard unit (2.3m by 1.2m by 1.2m) and also require a 240V supply or 5KVA generator.
Disabled units are also available with all the HSE required features.
Portable Toilet Logistics
Portable toilet companies will usually offer a full service at least once a week as part of a hire contract. This will include cleaning the units, emptying the tanks, restocking supplies and checking for good operation and any damage.
Toilet units with running water will require connection to both mains water and mains sewers or a septic tank.
Some construction site toilets/showers will also need a 240V electricity supply or 5KVA generator. Portable toilet companies can supply generators if you don’t have your own.
The simple, self-contained unit can be placed anywhere that is accessible by a service vehicle and the position of other units is only restricted by their power and water supplies/access to a septic tank.
