DMAIC is a project methodology used in Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma frameworks. It is one of many methodologies that arose from the study of quality improvement studies in manufacturing processes from the 50s onwards. It is based on W. Edwards Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, used for the control and continuous improvement of business processes, products and services.
The Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle has the following four steps:
-
PLAN – Establish the goals of the improvement and establish a method for achieving those goals.
-
DO – Put the improvement into action
-
CHECK – Study the results and compare them against the expected outcomes.
-
ACT – Take corrective action where necessary to close the gap between actual and expected results.
DMAIC takes this concept and expands and elaborates on it. The five steps of DMAIC are:
-
DEFINE the problem and a clear objective
-
MEASURE the key characteristics of the process as it stands and collect the data
-
ANALYSE the data to establish relationships and find the root cause of problems
-
IMPROVE the process based upon the data analysis. Set up pilot runs to test the improvements.
-
CONTROL the process to ensure that deviations from the target state are corrected immediately and before defects occur. Put in place process control methods to achieve this.
Various statistical tools and techniques are available at each stage of the process to ensure that decisions are taken in a methodical and scientifically robust way.
As you can see, the DMAIC methodology enhances the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle by adding evidence based decision making. This reduces the scope for error, ensures that planned improvements actually add value to the process as a whole and that this value can be demonstrated to anyone who cares to ask.
Training in DMAIC
Both Six Sigma training courses and Lean Six Sigma training courses provide tutelage in DMAIC project methodology.
Six Sigma is a management system developed by Motorola in the eighties to minimise defects in the manufacturing process.
Lean Six Sigma is a synthesis of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methodologies – lean manufacturing is a manufacturing process which aims to eliminate waste and improve process flow.
Both Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma training courses are available at Yellow Belt, Green Belt and Black Belt levels which reflect the familiarity of the belt holder with the tools and techniques required to plan and implement DMAIC projects.
