Certification is provided by most training companies and accredited by widely recognised professional quality improvement organisations like BSI Group or the British Quality Foundation. Black Belt certification normally involves a four hour open book exam and evidence of having successfully managed two Six Sigma projects.
A candidate for Black Belt Six Sigma does not have to have completed Yellow or Green Belt training previously but it is recommended. Trying to learn the content of all the courses in one go is a tall order. Courses last from 2 to 4 weeks but due to the project work evidence requirement, full certification can take much longer.
Online Six Sigma Black Belt training is available but does not provide the practical team based exercises and personal attention that most deem necessary for complete assimilation of Six Sigma techniques. Online certification though can be a convenient solution for large organisations implementing their own in-house Six Sigma training programmes.
*Lean Six Sigma is a synthesis of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methodologies. Lean Manufacturing is manufacturing process which aims to eliminate waste and improve process flow. Lean Six Sigma is therefore obviously more relevant to companies and managers in primary and secondary industry.
