Van leasing is a simple and transparent way of paying for and maintaining a commercial vehicle if you don’t have the budget (or the need) to buy a van outright. When leasing a van for your business you pay no lump sums, but make fixed monthly payments for use of the vehicle and have the option of purchasing at the end of the lease term. And if you don’t know your van brands, but do know your budget, a lease broker will be more helpful than a salesman who has vans to flog.
Van lease terms are usually from 12 to 60 months. Most payment schedules are monthly, but occasionally you can also opt for quarterly payments. Usually a lease broker will give you the flexibility to pay a larger deposit up front to lower your regular payments. You may find also that the lease contract stipulates a maximum mileage (usually contract hire), but most long term leases and lease purchase contract have no limit. Your regular payments will also cover maintenance of the van.
There are two main types of van leasing schemes:
- Standard Lease – This type of lease gives you use of the van (usually with unlimited mileage) and covers any maintenance costs, but does not give you ownership of the van at the end of the lease term. You can, however, claim back the VAT on your payments.
- Contract Hire – Works like a lease but during the contract the vehicle is not officially owned by the lessee. The contract also includes a maximum mileage.
- Hire purchase – Fixed monthly payments as with a lease, but ownership passes to the lessee at the end of the lease. If you wish to gain ownership earlier than the minimum term of the lease, you can pay a settlement figure up front.
