Video conferencing enables you to conduct face-to-face meetings with people around the world, without having to factor in the cost of flights or accommodation. It brings together two or more locations by video image as well as by audio for a meeting. In addition, video conferencing may be used to share documents; however it is distinct from web conferences. With video conferencing there is a greater emphasis on the image and interaction between people, rather than the content or documents.
There are both room systems and personal systems you can choose from with video conferencing. Typically, a videoteleconference (VTC) room system will consist of:
- Video camera or webcam
- A computer, projector or television
- Microphone
- Speakers
- Digital Telephone Network, LAN or the Internet
If you would prefer a personal system, you can choose from either a small desktop screen (approximately 20 inch) with dial-in system, or a business media phone from which you can make video and voice calls.
If there are three or more participants in a call, you may need a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU). Participants dial in to the MCU, and the MCU can also be used to dial other parties. MCU’s are available in both a stand alone format or they can be integrated into a VTC unit. Not all video conferencing solutions need a MCU, in either format, as they are able to receive multipoint calls without a central manager.
