Payroll Software for Mac

Payroll Software for Mac

Payroll software is one of those things that made doing business easier by several orders of magnitude. Like all excellent software it’s easy to ask how any business ever functioned without it. Not only will payroll software do all the paperwork associated with paying employees, it can also be integrated with tax systems and has many features that will be useful for HR. Given that Payroll Software is so useful, it is remarkably inexpensive – even for Mac systems.

Macs have dominated the creative industries, but the stable operating system, user-friendly graphic interface and security features mean that they are increasingly part of business life as well. Payroll software has kept in step with this growing market. Payments are increasingly coming via iPhones and other Mac devices, so Mac-compatible software packages are an obvious choice.

Functions that should be expected of good payroll software include:

  • Customer support - ideally cloud-based
  • Report generation
  • Pay summaries
  • Pension calculations
  • Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Pay calculations
  • Holiday pay reports
  • Sick pay calculations

Best Payroll Providers

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have also kept up with these trends. Decent accounting packages are compatible and accepted by HMRC, and good payroll software will be, too. Formerly, employers submitted pay as you earn (PAYE) information on every employee on a monthly basis. Now, it is mandatory to submit this information to HMRC every time an employee is paid. This is known as ‘real time information’. RTI compliance means sending in a full payment submission (FPS) form, before or on the same day that money is sent to the employee. RTI compliant payroll software can automate the process.

Some of the best payroll packages for Mac include:

Payroo

HMRC has a list of over 30 accepted payroll packages, but Payroo was the first company they tested and deemed suitable. Using Payroo requires an internet connection because the software is cloud-based. Aiming to reach as much of the market as possible, Payroo has scalable applications and is designed for companies of all sizes.

The pricing structure is both fair and reasonable and Payroo is free for businesses with fewer than 10 employees. Any additional staff are charged at £3 pa – payable at the end of the tax year.

Features include

  • RTI compliance
  • RTI eReturns – automatic reports go directly to the HMRC website
  • P32, P13 and P35 – automatically sends required paperwork to HMRC
  • Individual employee accounts
  • Holiday and absence administration
  • New employee paperwork
  • P11 generation for employees who are leaving
  • Pay summaries
  • Integration with most accounting software

Support: online support is free.

Payroo clearly provides good value for money payroll management package on the market. Unfortunately some of the more complex features performed by other mac-compatible payroll software are missing from Payroo. That said, for a small business, what Payroo offers is perfectly functional and the features listed above can be expected on any other package as well.
